Dr. Gurgel and Dr. Somogy both diagnose and manage macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, cataracts, dry eye, and other eye conditions. They combine a careful examination with advanced imaging and targeted tests to look for changes early. Their goal is to start appropriate care before disease causes vision loss that affects your daily life.
From cataracts and dry eye to inflammation, infections, and concerns at the back of the eye, we explain what is happening and what can help. Your care may include prescription treatment, imaging, follow-up, or coordination with a specialist for procedures such as retinal injections or surgery.
Age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, affects the part of the eye that helps you read, recognize faces, and see fine details. Dry AMD involves changes and damage in this central tissue. Wet AMD involves abnormal blood vessels that can leak and cause faster vision loss. Both doctors monitor these changes, discuss steps to protect your sight, and arrange prompt retinal specialist care when needed.
OCT shows the retinal layers and helps us look for fluid. OCT-A maps blood flow to help identify abnormal vessels associated with wet AMD. Together with your eye exam, these images help distinguish dry changes from signs of wet AMD and guide the next step. The noninvasive (without cutting or piercing the eye) scan takes seconds: rest your chin, hold still, and look at a target. The OCT-A scan itself needs no dye injection or bright camera flash.
Our doctors manage eye disease and coordinate referrals when needed. Dr. Somogy also provides minor in-office procedures; our cataract partnership with Dr. Privett connects Anamosa consultations and hospital surgery with follow-up at Sigma.

Your doctor determines when OCT-A is useful. It complements the examination and does not replace dilation (drops that widen your pupils so we can see inside your eyes) or every test that uses dye to show blood flow at the back of the eye.
